SEO services

Article by John Black

Search Engine Optimization or SEO as it is known by, is an essential ingredient for any website to be successful.  However it can be very puzzling for website owners particularly for those new to the entire idea of promoting on the internet.  There are often three reactions the entire concept of SEO ;

1.  Some feel that it is a waste of your time and that simply the act of putting an internet site on the web is enough.

2.  Some believe that they can just do it all themselves and that there isn’t much to it.

3.  Many feel that it is definitely something that should be delegated to a professional and that their valuable time is better spent doing things for their businesses that they excel at.

All 3 perspectives have merit, for a few companies just having a site is enough.  The sort of business this would work for is one that isn’t very likely to have people searching for their services on the web.  For example a personal Chiropractic practice in a fairly small city.

In a touch bigger towns, depending on the quantity of competing companies have sites online, it may be feasible to get good results by doing a small amount of promotion yourself.

For the majority getting it to work well actually does require the services of a professional Search Engine Optimization consultant.
Search engine optimisation is a field that’s constantly changing and the systems and methods that need to be used to get good search engine visibility are also an ever changing phenomenon.

the great thing about using SEO services to get your website to rank well in the search engines is that it is advertising that not only is working for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  It is a way of bringing in customers that are actively searching for what you are providing.

Consider the traditional kinds of advertising – newspapers, mags, television, local papers or radio.  They’re all a kind of shotgun approach, sending your marketing far and wide in the hope that your future clients happen to be reading, watching or listening to them at exactly the right time.

While with search engine selling it is simply possible with good SEO services and a well set up website, to put your offering directly in front of the people that have purposely looked for your service or product by typing it into a search engine.

Another great thing about using search engine optimisation to raise your business, is that it is quantifiable.  Unlike more traditional forms of advertising, it is wholly possible to track how many people come to your internet site.  Not just that you can tell where in the world they come from, which keyword phrase they used to find you, which search engine they came via and how many came thru each of the keywords.

with extra standard advertising not only is it a shotgun approach, in most cases it is not measurable and typically the costs concerned are extremely high.

What Comes First – The Web Design Or The SEO?

Posted by affilateguru in Uncategorized

Should I optimise my new website for SEO or is the design more important? This is a question that will raise a lively debate but the answer you give will be heavily weighed by the job you do.

A graphics design specialist will argue in most of cases that the website design is the prime consideration of course. And let’s be honest without that visually pleasant to the eye design a browser will navigate away from your site within a matter of seconds or so they lead you to believe. But then that raises an all together different debate of how did they find your site amongst all your competitors?

The most common web development curve goes along the lines of website gets designed ..website design looks excellent and gets client approval. Needs some content ok, we’ll rustle something up…..site gets published and time passes but only minimal traffic!

And then even more time passes by until eventually perhaps months and sometimes years later the situation is either so critical or the company are having to spend out on adwords that finally website promotion firm gets called in or the sales manager starts to question the lack of inbound enquiries from the web, and before you know it you are investing in a web marketing strategy to try and get noticed by the search engines.

Is this the fast road to success? The thousands of website owners that have travelled this route will certainly argue that it most definitely is not as this hope for the best web development criteria delays any websites success by far too long, and even more frightening  results in huge losses of both business opportunity and profitability.

The search engines don’t care about what the site looks like but with minimal attention to search engine optimisation so often this important first exposure when the website first gets indexed is totally wasted, if all the search engines find is a poorly optimised site with scant regard paid to any SEM requirements or keyword capture.

With only a little extra investment spent on pre development SEO (which should at the very least include keyword research and SEO copywriting) gives an worthy return on investment as invariably when the site goes live and gets indexed it will achieve a far better search engine position from day one and it has been known for pre-optimised websites to hit a page one result straight away.

Backlinks methods you should avoid

how to get more backlinks

OK, this is a big subject and I need to emphasise it’s not an exact science. But here is what I have learned in my analysis at the Backlinks clinic:

Authority – explained

The more authority your web pages have the higher you will rank on Google. Authority means that people trust you and your information. The good news is that authorities trusted by humans are also recognised as trustworthy by Google. A good illustration is the .edu and .gov suffixes. These suffixes imply they are trustworthy sources of content and it’s an established fact that as far as Google is concerned backlinks from these web addresses to your site will “pass on” authority to your site. Another great example is Wikipedia as the entries here are almost always added by by tribes of people as opposed to a single source.

So it follows that authority is significantly influenced by the source of your backlinks and if authoritative sites link to you then you inherit their influence and in the eyes of Google you become more authoritative and hence the trust in your site by Google goes up.

How Google declares what is and isn’t authoritative is a guarded secret for good reason and falls in line with Google’s thinking of “Do no evil”. The last thing the Internet needs is an individual or a group manipulating the formulae that Google uses in its efforts to try and bring some order to probably the most significant technological development of this period in history.

How not to get Backlinks

In the same vein it’s worth my while stating some ‘black hat sources and practices of acquiring backlinks that Google not only disapproves of but appears to be acting to ‘’categorize as negative authorities. In no particular order of severity, the prime examples are:

  • Paid backlinks – hubs where individuals buy and sell backlinks
  • Comment spam – entries that have links on blog pages that are just not associated to the main theme.
  • Low quality and *duplicate content – ‘scraped’ or copied
  • Fast growth – there are a large selection of ways that this is achievable, Google isn’t stupid. Any sudden rise in the amount of backlinks is going to show up on Google’s radar, especially if it’s a brand new domain.
  • Backlinks from unscrupulous sites – these are particularly henous as you are guilty by association – need I say more.

*There is another factor where I may be on dodgy ground, but major news portals appear to get a lot of authority and I have definitely observed significant quantities of the same article over and over again on different web sites with no penalties, I am still looking at this, only as a percentage of the results I am seeing go against the consistent behaviors I normally expect to see. More on this is in a future post….
