The Myths of Internet Dating

Posted by affilateguru in Uncategorized

A huge number of new online dating services have appeared in recent years. There have been some scare stories published in various magazines and newspapers.

Some newspapers have suggested that online dating is really only for sad and desperate computer geeks. This is a long way from the truth.

A common myth, believed by many, is that online dating isn’t safe. The truth is that dating through an online service that requires membership is obviously much safer than dating a complete stranger who you’ve just met in a pub or club.

Many online dating services provide their members with sensible advice telling them how to make certain their dates are safe. Also, the cost and commitment required from members precludes time wasters and those looking for a quick one-night-stand.

Another common misconception is that online dating is only for computer nerds. The days when computers were only operable by technically qualified super-geeks have long gone. Computers are used these days by everybody, young and old.

One magazine article I recently read on the subject of online dating suggested that everybody on the system had lied about their personal details. People can and do misrepresent themselves, but they do so offline as well. Many of the best online dating services will take steps to verify personal details but people also need to rely upon their own judgement.

Another commonly believed myth is that online dating is really only suitable for young people. Like the idea that online dating is only for computer geeks, noting could be further from the truth. Internet dating has actually brought many people together of all ages. I have two close friends, both in their sixties, who met through online dating. He runs his own company car leasing firm and she worked for a well known van leasing firm. The common experience that these two older people had from their working lives meant that they got on immediately and they’re now planning their wedding.

Some people like to suggest that online dating is really only for the desperate and for people who are socially inept. People who sign up to online dating services are generally honest, genuine people who are socially capable. They simply recognize the benefits that the online dating services provide by putting them in touch with prospective partners who share common interests. Another good friend who has found love and romance through online dating plays guitar in a popular local jazz band. He also runs a popular local guitar shop. For him, guitars are his life. Online dating introduced him to a lovely lady who not only shared his keen interest in guitars but she is a talented jazz singer who now sings with his band.

One criticism applied to online dating services is that they are too expensive. I would personally choose the more expensive service as this is less likely to attract those looking for a one-night-stand. The cost of the service should be compared with what it would have cost in dinners and drinks to learn as much about your date.

Internet dating is here to stay. It provides a cost-effective and time-saving way to meet like minded people with whom you stand a good chance of finding love and romance.
