One of our clients was concerned that their brand name and article information was being associated to a cheap domain names because their story was posted on a travel website offering discount airline fares, while they are promoting a 4-star travel destination.

Not all article directories and blogs are created equal, so the more exposure you get the better.  The primary purpose of these article submissions is to get the backlinks.  This is what SEO and getting organic search traffic is all about.  Links mean value and quality score for your site.  The article submissions are fundamental for creating web presence for your site.

Regarding the Catch-22:  In general there is a question that visitors researching topics of interest might actually find these articles rather than find your website; however then if you do the math it becomes into a very small chance that there will be a bad connotation perceived by a target audience.  Most of the undesirable content is in adword ads, that many surfers are likely to ignore regardless.  The handful of questionable domain names just don’t add up to much in the big picture.

When we spin and submit articles they are set not to appear on adult, gambling, on-line pharmacy, or weight loss pages … but other than designating categories to submit we’re at the mercy of web pages and rely upon them to follow to submission directory rules.  The rewards far outweigh the possibility of any negative perceptions.  Concerns about protecting brand are valid and worth talking about.   But these links are the foundation to having readers find the original content through organic search.
